Our papers @ e-ruralnet International Conference 2011

We will participate to the e-ruralnet 2011 International Conference titled “ICT for inclusive learning: the way to forward” to be held on 10-11 November 2011 in Florence, Italy at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi.

Here the title, authors and abstracts of our two accepted papers:

A. Calvani, G. Bonaiuti, M.C. Pettenati Instructional Principles, Universal Learning Design and the role of technologies

  • Inclusion rises new and important challenges in educational design and practices. Curriculum design should not be addressed to an “average student” and subsequently adapted to special subjects; instead it should be conceived so as to be for all since the very beginning of the design, taking into account the various peculiarities (special needs, gifted students, cultural differences, language differences). Fields such as the architectural design and technology design, have already fully endorsed the Universal Access principles; more recently the educational domain has also started to endorse a “Universal Design for Learning” (UDL) perspective. Inside this context we propose an “Instructional Design for All” model (IDAll), which moves from a comparative analysis of Gagné, Merrill and Cognitive Load Theory general models matching it with the domain of Special Needs. Within this theoretical framework we focus on how technology becomes a crucial asset for an effective approach to Universal Design Learning implementation. The role of technology is relevant for the increased flexibility in setting up learning environments (face2face, online, in mobility) and for the increased possibility of customizing the education according to specific contexts and needs.

M.C. Pettenati, M. Švab , V. Benigno, M. Repetto, A. Calvani, Supporting Inclusive Learning Design through the e-PEI online Counseling System.

  • In this paper we present e-PEI, a Web-based online counseling system intended to support educators of students with special needs. More specifically we target homebound students i.e. students permanently or temporarily confined at home/hospital due to illness or disability. The objective of e-PEI is thus twofold: 1) allows sharing of instructional design experiences, experts’ advices and knowhow in inclusive learning design through the elicitation of tacit knowledge and the support of procedural knowledge; 2) it aims at scaffolding the stakeholders in education of all grades in designing inclusive learning experiences availing of the experts know how provided by the system. e-PEI is a Drupal-based collaboration and content management environment.

paper@NEM2011

Our paper titled “IDN-Travel: touristic data production and reuse beyond walled gardens” has been accepted for presentation at the NEM Summit 2011 (Torino, 27-29 September 2011, www.nem-summit.eu)

The paper is authored by: Riccardo Billero, Maria Chiara Pettenati, Lucia Ciofi and Franco Pirri

Abstract: The diffusion of social networks has boosted the user-generated content sharing in different application domains. At present travel-oriented social networks do not allow the users to organize their information with an easy reuse of data found on a Web-scale. In this paper we address the problem of Web of data reuse through the IDN-Travel Application, a solution that allows users to manage granular data that can be structured as desired, by reusing other information that may be everywhere in the Web. The present application is built on top of the InterDataNet architecture allowing users to collaborate on structured documents aggregating distributed data from the Web. In InterDataNet each data unit has an owner responsible entitled of its management. Each authorized user will (re)use data directly from its origin without duplicating it. This work aims to demonstrate the technical viability of this solution, allowing the user to (re)use data without be confined within the walled gardens established by social media.

The InterDataNet infrastructure solution handling auxiliary information related to data and documents reuse can therefore serve other application scenarios.

paper@Sie-l 2011

Pettenati, 2011, Roadmap to PLE – A Research Route to Empower the Use of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs). Interaction Design & Architecture Journal – Special Issue (ISSN 1826-9745).

Autori: Turchi, S., Pettenati, M.C., Ciofi, L., Pirri F., Giuli D.
